An Interview with Carla Shatz – Harvard’s First Female Neurobiology Chair

چکیده
CS: Well – let me say first off a couple of things: What I expected to happen in my life, never happened, and what happened was not what I had expected. I fully expected while I was growing up, that I would have kids and a family. I was married but I put off the decision to have kids for too long and when it finally came time to have them, I found that I could not conceive. The subsequent infertility treatments were very time consuming, so what time was saved by not having kids got spent in the difficult struggle to conceive. There is never a good time to have children, so my advice is not to postpone this decision. Find an environment where having children is an acceptable part of life and where there are supportive senior faculty. Senior women in the field are increasingly more understanding about the needs of a professional woman to balance kids and career. Now there are several senior women on the faculty here at Harvard. What I did not expected was to have such a successful career. I have found science to be thrilling, exciting and all consuming. It was so much fun that I didn’t notice time passing. This love of science I got from mentors and parents.

متن کاملDecoy drug allows brains of adult mice to form new connections , study finds
At critical times in the brain’s development, windows open for neurons to reach out and form new connections. The language window, for example, is open for a time to allow kids to learn multiple languages and speak them like a native. Then it mostly closes, leaving adults fumbling for words and unable to roll their R’s. The question has been what controls that window and, more to the point, wha...

The existence of a critical mass of talented scientists in the fields of Biophysics and Neurobiology in Latin America gave impetus to efforts to foster cooperation at the regional level. Following on from ameeting of scientists from five South American countries in Caracas in 1989, a survey was carried out to determine which laboratories in the region were conducting leading-edge research in th...

متن کاملNeuronal plasticity and cellular immunity: shared molecular mechanisms.
It is becoming evident that neurons express an unusual number of molecules that were originally thought to be specific to immune functions. One such molecule, class I major histocompatibility complex, is required in the activity-dependent refinement and plasticity of connections in the developing and adult central nervous system, demonstrating that molecules can perform critical roles in both s...
